Embroidery Do’s & Don’ts: What to Know Before You Stitch Your Logo

Close up embroidery machine making patterns

Embroidery is one of the smartest ways to brand workwear — it lasts, it looks professional, and it gives your logo that quality finish. But to get the best results, there are a few little tips worth knowing before you place your order.

Whether you’re kitting out a team or ordering a one-off hoodie, here are the embroidery do’s and don’ts to help you get it right first time.

✅ Do: Use High-Quality Artwork

Clean artwork = clean stitches.
If you’ve got your logo in vector format (PDF, EPS, SVG, or AI), that’s ideal. If not, don’t panic — we can help redraw it. A crisp file gives the machine the best chance to produce sharp, neat stitching.

Tip: If you’re downloading a logo from social media, chances are it’s too low-quality for embroidery.

✅ Do: Think About Stitch-Friendly Designs

Embroidery works best with bold, simple shapes and strong lines.

Things that embroider beautifully:

  • Solid logos
  • Clear lettering
  • Strong contrast between colours

If your design has tiny details or super-thin lines, we can suggest tweaks to make sure it stitches cleanly.

✅ Do: Choose the Right Garment

Different fabrics behave differently under the needle.
For example:

  • Polos and sweatshirts embroider brilliantly
  • Softshell jackets need careful stitch work
  • Very fine fabrics aren’t always suitable for embroidery

If you’re unsure, pop into our showroom — we’ve got over 300 garments you can see and feel before ordering.

❌ Don’t: Use Very Small Text

As a rule of thumb, avoid text smaller than 5mm.
Anything smaller risks becoming unreadable when stitched.

If your logo has tiny lettering, we may offer a text-only version for embroidery and keep the full logo for print.

❌ Don’t: Expect Gradients to Embroider

Embroidery uses thread, so it can’t blend colours like a screen or printer.
Shading and gradients usually need simplifying — but don’t worry, we’ll guide you.

❌ Don’t: Forget Placement

Left chest embroidery is classic, but think about where else might work for your business:

  • Sleeve branding for trades & gyms
  • Back neck detail for retail brands
  • Front chest for uniforms & events

Placement can make a big impact — and we’ll advise what suits each garment best.

Bonus Tip: Ask Us First

If you’re unsure whether your logo will work well as embroidery, just ask. We’re here to help you get the best finish, not to sell you something that won’t look right.

Bring your artwork, have a chat, and see real embroidered samples in our showroom. No guesswork, no pressure.
